COMMUNITY TOUR

Day Tour

Join our community tour as we unveil the rich heritage of Yellowknife. We'll start our journey at the historic Giant Yellowknife Mine, where gold was struck in 1946. From there, we'll explore the captivating stories that shaped this remarkable community.
In 1953, Yellowknife became a Municipal District, electing its first mayor. The city was later honored with the title of the capital of the Northwest Territories in 1967, and on January 1, 1970, it officially became a designated city.
Our tour will take you through the town area, where the original community development around Latham Island, the Rock, and the neighboring flats come to life. Discover the charm of the Old Town guide, offering the flexibility to explore different sections at your own pace, immersing yourself in the city's captivating heritage.
Yellowknife's name, along with the adjacent river and bay on Great Slave Lake, is rooted in the copper knives crafted by the Dene people. These knives were skillfully made from naturally occurring copper ore found along the Coppermine River. Today, the Yellowknives Dene First Nation, encompassing the neighboring communities of Dettah and N'Dilo, proudly uphold the traditions of their ancestors - the Slavey, Dogrib, and Chipewyan-speaking Dene - who have inhabited the area for thousands of years, leaving behind a wealth of archaeological evidence.
Experience the spirit of community as we delve into Yellowknife's past. Uncover the sites that hold special significance and embrace the unique heritage that makes this community tour an unforgettable journey.
